First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, Bellevue, WA Available Position: Graphic Designer If interested, contact: Travis Talbot, ttalbot@fpcbellevue.org JOB DESCRIPTION: Graphic Designer Assist in establishing and maintaining communications standards and identity for First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue (FPCB); and perform related work as required. Work with various department staff and volunteers to interpret and translate their expressed needs and ideas into concepts, and develop and translate them into effective communication materials; plan and organize projects and production processes to ensure completion in a timely and cost-effective manner; conceive, plan produce and create files or artwork; work under pressure to meet deadlines; follow and give oral and written directions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population. SCOPE Hour per week: 40 Supervisor: Director of Communications Benefits available: Yes (medical, vacation, etc.) Compensation: $15-$17/hr The Graphic Designer takes projects from the initial concept stage through completion of the project; creates layouts and designs artwork for marketing and communications at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, but not limited to, print media, web development, and other various forms of print and electronic media. The work demands creative flair, up-to-date knowledge of industry software and a professional approach to time, costs and deadlines. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. 1.Conceives ideas, concepts and campaigns; designs, produces, or works with others in the creation of communication materials in print, web, and other various forms of media. 2.Works with various departmental staff, church volunteers, and team members to provide professional recommendations for concept, design, art direction, production, print buying, and quality control. 3.Defines design criteria; develops concept and direction; proposes, directs and creates art and photography. 4.Creates and develops media using digital art and photographic techniques. 5.Monitors and tracks production projects to ensure proper and timely completion; works with outside vendors to meet production deadlines. 6.Responsible for print and prepress specifications, purchasing, approvals and quality control. 7.Maintains and archives project files and records. 8.Contributes to the editorial development of projects. 9.Attends church staff and communication department meetings. Meets with appropriate committees as necessary. 10.Debriefs with project owner and evaluate effectiveness of project and customer satisfaction. 11.Rip and upload MP3, WMA, PodCast and other various forms of electronic audio for web use. 12.Create banners and other various projects for FPCB web use. 13.Website support and design; supports, develops, and maintains church website. Assists other departments in training and development to assure corporate standard and consistency. PROFESSIONAL SKILLS 1.Detailed oriented. 2.Must be able to multitask, managing several projects at one time. 3.Ability to manage time and meet deadlines. 4.Ability to work effectively with church staff and volunteers as a team player. 5.Understanding of text editing and basic page modification for the web. 6.Strong writing and editing skills, excellent command of grammar and proofreading. 7.The ability to come up with unusual or clever ideas about a given topic or situation, or to develop creative ways to solve a problem. 8.Strong desire to stay relevant and grow in related field of graphic design. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE 1.Principles, practices and techniques of digital art, graphic design, layout and illustration. 2.Operation of computer and required graphics software programs. 3.Principles and design techniques of typesetting, printing and photography; printing processes (including four color process), various types of ink, paper stock, and other supplies used, their characteristics, uses and limitations; electronic desktop publishing equipment and techniques (such as form design and layout techniques). 4.Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. CUSTOMER SERVICE ATTITUDE Must have positive and encouraging attitude. Need to view all projects with a positive, anything is possible attitude relative to cost and time. View staff and volunteers as customers with the attitude of creating high customer satisfaction and meeting or exceeding expectations for design projects. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: A two-year college or trade school degree in graphic art and design. Experience: Two years experience in graphic art, production and design, and desktop publishing. Software: Adobe Design Suite CS3 (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) Adobe FLASH (preferred but not required), and Microsoft Office SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Personal commitment to Jesus Christ and to the church.
